Camariñas and its bobbin lace: what to see

Camariñas is one of the most characterful fishing towns on the Costa da Morte: the home of Galician bobbin lace, looking out over its estuary towards Muxía and crowned by the Cabo Vilán lighthouse. From Laxe it is about 40 minutes by car, so it makes an easy half-day or full-day trip from Casa do Rancho, in the hamlet of O Canle.

Why is Camariñas famous?

Camariñas is synonymous with bobbin lace (encaixe de palillos), a craft that the palilleiras (lacemakers) work by hand with thread, bobbins and a cushion, passed down from one generation to the next. You can see it at the Lace Museum (Museo do Encaixe) and, if you travel at Easter, at the Mostra do Encaixe, the big fair that fills the town’s streets. It is the finest handmade souvenir you can take home from the Costa da Morte.

Beyond the lace, Camariñas combines a fishing harbour, dizzying cliffs and some of the most history-laden, legend-soaked corners of the Galician coast.

What to see in Camariñas in a day?

Here are the must-sees, ordered to make the most of your day:

  • Camariñas old town and harbour: stroll the waterfront and look out for lacemakers at work.
  • Lace Museum (Museo do Encaixe): the best introduction to the town’s craft.
  • Cabo Vilán lighthouse: the first electric lighthouse in Spain (1896), on dramatic cliffs.
  • English Cemetery: a maritime memorial between Camelle and Arou.
  • Camelle and the Man Museum: the legacy of German artist Manfred Gnädinger, “Man de Camelle”.
  • Wild beaches: Reira, Lago or Area Longa, fine sand and rough waters.

The Camiño dos Faros, the 200 km trail linking Malpica to Fisterra, crosses the Camariñas district and includes some of its most beautiful stages along the cliff edge.

Is the Cabo Vilán lighthouse worth it?

Yes. Cabo Vilán is one of the fiercest capes on the Galician Atlantic: granite cliffs, an almost permanently churning sea and a historic lighthouse — the first electric one in Spain — built on the rock itself in 1896. Beside the cape you will also see one of Spain’s earliest wind farms. It is the best spot in Camariñas for a sunset photo, taking care near the drop-offs.

What is the English Cemetery?

Between Camelle and Arou, in a lonely spot facing the sea, the English Cemetery (Cemiterio dos Ingleses) remembers the sailors of the British ship HMS Serpent, wrecked in 1890 at Punta do Boi with more than 170 victims. It is one of the places that best explains why this shore is called the “Coast of Death”, and a short but deeply evocative stop.
