Finisterre lighthouse from Laxe: a one-day trip

A lighthouse over the Costa da Morte sea at sunset, much like the atmosphere at Cape Finisterre

The Finisterre lighthouse is the perfect finale for a day out on the Costa da Morte. From Laxe it is about 65 km, just over 1 h 10 by car, so there is plenty of time to drive over, have lunch in the town and stay for sunset at the cape. This is the famous “end of the world” of the Camino de Santiago, where the mainland runs out over the Atlantic. This guide is written from Casa do Rancho, in the hamlet of O Canle (Laxe).

Why visit the Finisterre lighthouse?

For centuries, Cape Finisterre was thought to be the westernmost point of the known world (although that honour actually belongs to Cape Touriñán, a little further north). Today it is the symbolic goal of many pilgrims, who extend the Camino to the sea to see the kilometre 0 marker and the sunset over the ocean. The lighthouse, in service since 1853, crowns a wind-battered cliff with 180-degree views of the Atlantic.

It is also the end of the Camiño dos Faros, the 200 km coastal trail linking Malpica to Fisterra along the sea. If you like walking, our guide to the stages of the Camiño dos Faros from Laxe covers the finest sections close to home.

How to get to Finisterre from Laxe?

The easiest way is by car. The usual route leaves Laxe towards Baio and Vimianzo, joins the coast at Cee and Corcubión and reaches Fisterra in just over an hour. Public transport between Costa da Morte villages is scarce, so for a one-day trip we recommend your own or a rental car.

Once in Fisterra, it is about 3.5 km uphill from the town to the lighthouse: you can drive to the upper car park or walk it (around 45 min) if you fancy stretching your legs.

What to see at Cape Finisterre in a day?

A single day is enough for the essentials:

  • Finisterre lighthouse: the 1853 building and its viewpoint over the Atlantic.
  • The kilometre 0 marker: the milestone that marks the symbolic end of the Camino.
  • Monte Facho and the A Pedra viewpoint: a short climb with the best panoramas of the cape.
  • Praia de Langosteira: a large sandy beach at the entrance to the town, ideal for a stroll.
  • Castelo de San Carlos and Fisterra harbour, in the old fishing quarter.

Set aside time for lunch in the town: the market fish and shellfish in Fisterra are excellent.

What is the best time for the sunset?

The classic Finisterre image is the sunset from the cape, with the lighthouse in silhouette and the sun dropping over the ocean. Because the cape faces west, almost any clear evening delivers a great scene. Arrive with time to spare (half an hour before sundown) to park and find a spot, and check the exact sunset time for the season: in summer it can be after 22:00 and in winter around 18:30.
